Introduction

If you get your healthcare from the Department of Human Services (DHS) and you’re covered by Medicaid or CHIP in Pennsylvania, you need to begin to renew your benefits every year.

Before March 31, 2023, during the pandemic, beneficiaries could continue their medical benefits without renewing, so they didn’t lose their coverage. This was to help prevent the spread of disease and to make sure people could get the care they needed.

Renewing Your Benefits

Now, things are back to the way they were before the pandemic. If you get your medical benefits from the state, you have to renew your coverage every year to keep getting them. But don’t worry, there are ways we can help you with this process.

Updating Your Contact Information

To make sure you keep getting important information about your renewal process and forms, you should update your contact information and check your renewal date as soon as possible. You can do this by logging into your COMPASS account online, calling 1-877-395-8930, or calling 1-215-560-7226 if you live in Philadelphia. If you don’t complete your renewal by the due date, your state health coverage will end.

Completing and Returning Your DHS Renewal

You can complete and return your requested DHS renewal in four ways: by mail, online through COMPASS, by phone by calling 1-866-550-4355, or in-person at any local county assistance office (CAO). Completing your renewal will help DHS determine if you’re still eligible for health coverage through the state. If you’re still eligible, your Medicaid or CHIP coverage will continue. If you’re no longer eligible, you’ll be referred to Pennie, which is PA’s official health insurance marketplace. You will receive communications regarding other credible coverage options such as: Pennie and CHIP

Other Options

If you’re not eligible for Medicaid, you can still shop for plans through Pennie to avoid any lapse in coverage. CHIP provides affordable health coverage for families with children 19 or younger.
